Barberry leaf large rectangle post earrings

All items are handmade and are one of a kind from foraged wild and domesticated plants. I collect whatever is in season on my daily walks, usually in the Philadelphia area. The composition of my pieces range from traditional (using whole, pressed flowers and leaves) to more abstract. Each piece involves laying jewelry-grade resin in several layers, over several sittings.

Open backed brass rectangle with pressed new leaves from Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergill), an invasive species that dominates the understory of northeastern forests and is still prevalently planted in urban and suburban yards due to their hardiness.

Still, it can be beautiful, and beneficial: the shrub is rift with berberine, an antimicrobial and anti fungal alkaloid that also can be used as an effective liver tonic.
