All items are handmade and are one of a kind from foraged wild and domesticated plants. I collect whatever is in season on my daily walks, usually in the Philadelphia area. The composition of my pieces range from traditional (using whole, pressed flowers and leaves) to more abstract.
Tsuga canadensis - the eastern hemlock - Pennsylvania’s state tree. This tree may take 250-300 years just to reach maturity, and can live for 800 years. It used to grow from Maine to the Appalachian mountains. Like me, It is susceptible to burn if not sheltered from strong winds.
Decimated by the wooly adelgid, I may witness the end of this species in my lifetime. Its legacy is uncertain - and I can’t help but continually imagine the PA woods of old, abundant in behemoth old growth trees like chestnut and hemlock. One by one, struck down by tiny little invaders - the chestnut, the elm, and now the ash and the hemlock. What do we plant now? What does the future woodland look like? As a Buddhist, I know as well as anyone that the only constant in this universe is change, but we can honor everything along the way....
