All items are handmade and are one of a kind from foraged wild and domesticated plants. I collect whatever is in season on my daily walks, usually in the Philadelphia area. The composition of my pieces range from traditional (using whole, pressed flowers and leaves) to more abstract. Each piece involves laying jewelry-grade resin in several layers, over several sittings. This is a handmade piece, and imperfections are expected and not unwelcome.
50mm bronze oval, black backed, 8mm thick, overlaid with a pressed Japanese knotweed flowers. Long despised as an aggressive invasive plant, knotweed was actually purposefully planted around the country in great quantities for its good animal forage and outstanding ability to hold hills and streambanks together, preventing erosion.
It's early spring stalks are a nutrient dense superfood, and can be cooked and treated like rhubarb. It's a boon to pollinators, having both a high nectar and pollen content. You may have seen "bamboo" honey - that's Japanese knotweed.
It's been known to push through a layer of asphalt - yet look at the delicacy of the flowers! Wear this plant as a symbol of persistence, and grace under pressure.
Finished with 26 inch long fancy antique bronze chain and lobster clasp.
