I have two of these maple seeds that used to be joined. This one, #1, shown on the left in the first photo, has a slight rip in the wing like membrane that has been filled in with silver, which makes it really look distinctive.
Samaras: proof that trees can fly. I grew up with a silver maple in my the backyard, and while considered by many as a “weed tree” (meaning they are fine with planting themselves around without the assistance/permission of humans, and grow so fast that they are not so structurally sound as other mature trees), they way they flash their silvery leaf underbellies every time the wind blows like a flora burlesque dancer has always successfully charmed me.
This one of a kind pendant was made by layering .999 silver art clay, multiple times, directly on the leaf. During the firing process, the organic material burns away leaving fine detail captured in silver. Art Clay Silver is manufactured using 100% recycled and reclaimed silver.
According to Aida, the Japanese manufacturer of Art Clay, the silver is from athletic wear, eyeglasses, photography supplies, industrial sources, utensils and of course from silver jewelry that has been turned in for reclamation.
This maple seed is larger than the other, measuring at just under 3 inches long, that's why it's a couple of dollars more. Finished with a 16 inch long silver plated brass chain with lobster clasp.
